Every child deserves to belong in movement.

Belong In Movement is a community-based initiative in Hong Kong connecting children excluded from the fitness ecosystem to movement, mentorship, and belonging.

The gap isn't talent. It's access.

Every child has the capacity to find joy in movement. But for children growing up in under-resourced neighbourhoods, the path to that experience is blocked by barriers that have nothing to do with ability — cost, geography, language, and a culture that treats fitness as something to be earned through performance rather than enjoyed as part of life. The resources to change this already exist within Hong Kong's fitness community. What's missing is the structure to connect them.

A ten-week run club.

A 5K finish line.

A community that stays.

Belong In Movement's pilot programme is a ten-week run club for children, culminating in a group 5K.

It is deliberately simple: low-barrier, community-based, and built around consistency and belonging rather than competition. In parallel, BIM trains fitness professionals to recognise and respond to signs of distress in young participants — equipping the adults already in the room with the awareness to be more than coaches.

Over time, participants who choose to can grow into peer mentors, and eventually into the next generation of instructors. The community BIM serves becomes the community that leads it.

Built by someone who has seen both sides.

Belong In Movement was founded by Lydia Ching, a human rights lawyer who spent years working with refugees and ethnic minorities in Hong Kong before qualifying as a fitness instructor. That combination — understanding structural exclusion from the inside and understanding what movement can do for a person's sense of self — shapes BIM's approach.

It is not built looking in from the outside. It grows from lived experience of both the problem and the practice — and from the belief that the people closest to exclusion are the ones best placed to undo it.

This is being built. You can be part of it.

Belong In Movement is in its founding stage — assembling the right partners, refining the programme, and preparing for a pilot launch in December 2026.

If you are a fitness professional interested in working with young people in a more intentional way, or an organisation looking to support community-based programming in Hong Kong, we would welcome the conversation.
